Just How Important IS Your Headshot?

A headshot is not just a photo; it's a marketing tool that can open doors and change your life. - Gabrielle Revere

How important IS your headshot?

The old saying "a picture speaks a thousand words" didn't come to be a cliche for nothing! Take a look at the beautiful faces in the headline image below. Who stands out? Which images grab your attention? I'm not really a gambling person, but if I were, I think it's a safe bet that you are forming some initial impressions about each of the people featured here.

So, does your headshot really make that much difference? I mean, we all have cell phone cameras and in our digital landscape most people have become fairly savvy at snapping a quick selfie. That should do, right?

In actuality, that selfie probably isn't doing the best job of being your representative. Or how about this? If you ARE using a professionally created headshot, does it represent you AS YOU ARE TODAY? Sad truth is that we all age and change, and your headshot needs to keep pace. As your expert guide, I am going to strongly suggest you step away from the overly filtered selfie, the snapshot you cropped to get your ex literally out of the picture, or the years-old headshot that will leave people questioning if the person in the photo is the same person that is standing in front of them today.

Your headshot is the first impression that people have of you. Whether you're creating a professional profile on LinkedIn, putting together a portfolio, job hunting, or starting a a business, your headshot plays a crucial role in representing you and your personal brand. A great headshot can communicate confidence, approachability, and competence, all in one photo. On the other hand, a poorly executed headshot can have the opposite effect and portray you as unprofessional or not taking your personal brand seriously.

When it comes to creating a personal brand, consistency is key. Your headshot should have a similar look and feel across all your professional profiles and social media platforms, creating a cohesive and recognizable brand. Your headshot should also reflect your brand's values and messaging, such as creativity, innovation, or attention to detail. One of my favorite things to do in headshot sessions is a mix of professional and casual outfits and poses that have been carefully curated to portray a recognizable brand message while still offering you variety.

A headshot doesn't have to be a traditional, formal portrait. It doesn't even have to be restricted to the typical definition of only the head and shoulders with a very specific crop. It can be a creative expression showcasing your style, interests, and personality. However, it's important to remember that the purpose of a headshot is to represent you and your brand, so it should still maintain a professional standard.

In today's digital world, people often search for professionals online before meeting them in person. The image you present can get you that big meeting or leave you overlooked. A professional headshot gives potential clients or employers a glimpse into who you are, and helps them feel more comfortable and confident in working with you.

Top Tips for a Great Headshot

  • Lighting is one of the most important aspects of a good headshot. You want to make sure that the lighting is even, flattering, and highlights your best features. Natural light or soft, diffused lighting is often the best option.

  • Choose clothing that is professional, fits well, and makes you feel confident. Solid colors and classic styles are often a good choice, as they won't distract from your face. Leverage your brand colors and use accessories to bring some interest to your look.

  • Your facial expression can make or break a headshot. You want to convey confidence and approachability, but you don't want to overdo it. Relax your face, smile naturally, and avoid any extreme facial expressions. Try serious, semi-serious, smiling, and playful looks as appropriate to your personal brand.

  • The background of your headshot should be simple and unobtrusive. A solid color or simple pattern can work well, as long as it doesn't draw attention away from your face.

  • Skip the filters. Keep it clean, simple, and focused on you and your personality without adding gimmicks.

  • Finally, working with a professional photographer can make a big difference in the quality of your headshot. Look for someone with experience in headshot photography and a portfolio that demonstrates their skills. A good photographer will be able to work with you to achieve the look you want and make you feel comfortable during the session.
